Robbed at Gunpoint Twice at Work...
by Kizzy

I've been robbed twice at gunpoint while at work. The corporation refuses to do anything about it. A customer was even killed there and they still refuse to do anything. We have asked for security but with no luck. They did send out a memo stating it's "robbing season", and telling us to make sure we do our cash drops on time.
Are companies required to provide safety/security? I have had three guns pointed at my head and now I'm a nervous wreck. I'm afraid to go to work but I have to. I keep having panic attacks and I keep thinking about having my head blown off. It's a nightmare.. What can I do as an employee? Thanks.

ANSWER for "Robbed at Gunpoint Twice at Work...":

The first word which comes to mind is "QUIT". We all know the economy continues to writhe in pain and as a result jobs are hard to come by, but unless you are getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars you would be foolhardy to remain at your job. Wait, hundreds of thousands wouldn't even be enough!
We checked the laws in the State of Georgia. Unfortunately we weren't able to locate one which mandates retail establishments to have in place specific types of security. This means there isn't any law requiring the owner of your retail establishment to provide a certain number of cameras or other security devices.
Unfortunately the only way the owner of the retail store will incur liability is when an employee suffers serious bodily injury, or death.
Regrettably, there are few measures a retail establishment owner can take to thwart robberies. One of them is to make the store an armed fortress with bullet proof glass and iron bars. Doing so though, would make access to the inside of the store almost impossible. If the customers can't come in to buy whatever it is you have for sale, then the owner goes out of business very quickly.
Once the store is open to customers it becomes virtually impossible to stop a determined robber from committing his crime. We'd advise that you should find the nearest exit and, well, EXIT!
