Question about Domestic Abuse...

by Anonymous
(USA)

My boyfriend threw my purse down the stairs in college. I tried to catch it and subsequently fell down the stairs. Is that considered domestic abuse? If not, what does? If yes, what can I do?

Disclaimer: Information provided in your response is not formal legal advice, it is generic legal information and is based on the very limited information given in your question. You should always get a formal case evaluation from a licensed attorney.

ANSWER for "Question about Domestic Abuse...":

Anonymous (USA):

Throwing your purse down the stairs does not constitute domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is not easily defined. It can include physical abuse, mental abuse, financial abuse, or a combination of the three.

The individual act of throwing your purse down the stairs in an of itself doesn't rise to the level of domestic abuse. If you take the purse incident and link it to additional abuse, your boyfriend's actions may then rise to the level of domestic abuse.

If you believe you are being abused, or if any of your friends, fellow students, counselors or anyone else you trust tell you they are concerned about your well-being, you should immediately consider getting away from this "man" and taking measures to insulate yourself from him as well.

There are many facilities available for counseling domestic abuse victims. The mere fact you mentioned you might be the victim of domestic abuse is enough for you to seek counseling immediately. Don't delay. Act now!

Since laws change frequently and across jurisdictions you should get a personalized case evaluation from an attorney licensed in your state (if you haven't already). Find an experienced local attorney to give you a FREE personalized case review here.

Best of luck,
