Preventing Injuries In the Home
The home is usually considered to be a place where
everybody feels safe. Yet, there are many unexpected risks at home
which can be life threatening as well. In homes with little kids, extra
care must be taken to ensure that they are safe and sound. It’s true
that most of the common accidents and injuries in the home can be
prevented by taking simple precautions. Here’s a guide on how to
prevent injuries in the home.
According to a survey, 3,000 people in the United
States are killed by fire accidents every year, and more than 200,000
people are given medical treatment for injuries. Fire at home can be
caused by locked chimneys, water heaters, open flames, short-circuits,
certain environmental conditions or running a car inside a garage.
Items such as irons, oven, lamps, heaters, and curling irons can also
cause fire accidents.
Smoke and carbon monoxide detector are alarms
which can be installed at home to detect carbon monoxide poisoning as
well as fire. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, but the
detector can measure CO levels in the atmosphere to set off the
alarm.
It’s important to ensure that the smoke and carbon
monoxide detector is
working properly. Check the instruction manual to find out the proper
to maintain the alarm. The old batteries should be replaced on time and
all smoke alarms of the house should be interconnected to get a better
output. Fires can happen anytime, even during the time when everybody
is fast asleep. This is why smoke alarms are to be installed.
Space heater is commonly used for heating rooms.
It’s installed on the walls or windows of many houses but it comes with
the risk of fire and air poisoning as it releases a good amount of
carbon monoxide. In this sense, it can present some level of danger if
the necessary precautions are not taken. The space heater should be
kept at a distance of 3 feet away from combustible products. The
portable space heater should be turned off before sleeping. Keep
children and pets away from the space heater.
For people who are
thinking of buying a kerosene heater, it’s best to check with the local
fire department. In kerosene heaters, the refilling should be done only
when the heater cools down.
In the cooking area or the kitchen, a kid free
zone should be formed around the stove. Accidents in the kitchen can be
serious because there are boiling pots and hot pans. Unattended cooking
can also be dangerous. For cleanliness as well as a precaution, the
cooking area should be kept clean at all times. Infants should not be
held in the hands while you are cooking. To prevent fire accidents,
lighters and matches should be kept from the reach of children.
Another common risk of injury in the home is
falling. In a year, it’s estimated that more than 6,000 deaths in the
United States are caused by falling. Young children and the elderly are
more likely to fall so the necessary precautions have to be made.
Infants can suffer serious injuries even if they fall from bed.
To prevent slipping, nonslip mats should be
installed in bathrooms and kitchens to prevent injuries caused by
slipping. The mats should have non skid bottom. Grab bars can also be
installed at the right places. After mopping the floors, try to make
them dry as quickly as possible. Tripping on objects or wires can also
cause severe injuries. Always check to see that the wires are safely
tucked away and there are no unnecessary objects lying on the floor.
Supervise the kids while they are playing in their room so that all the
objects are kept in the right places.
Loose carpets can also cause
tripping. Perform regular checks to ensure that they are properly
tacked down. Another thing to monitor is loose railing. When a person
leans too heavily on a loose railing, the railing can give way, causing
some form of injury or even death. On the other hand, the lack of
railing can also be a cause of concern. Safety railing should be
installed on the top and bottom of stairs to prevent infants from
falling down.
Children are generally less aware of potential
dangers. For this reason, they are more vulnerable to the risks of
injury or even death. The home can be a dangerous place for children if
the necessary precautions are not taken.
Children who play with plastic bags or ropes are
susceptible to the danger of suffocation. Small plastic bags should be
kept where young children cannot get their hands on them. Ropes,
ribbons, and strings should not be given to babies as toys.
Sometimes,
food products such as peanuts or chocolate can also cause suffocation
so it’s best to be cautious. Choking can cause unexpected problems so
small objects should not be kept on floor. Children should not be kept
unsupervised as they are likely to put things into their mouth.
Younger children can drown in water of a few
inches. As a precaution, they should not be left alone at a place where
water is stored. Buckets in bathrooms should not be filled with water
and kids should not be left alone in the bathtub or swimming pool.
Poisoning is another danger in the home. It can be
prevented by keeping items such as paint thinners, pesticides, drugs,
and cleaners at secure places away from the reach of little kids.
Substances such as batteries, soaps, and detergents can also cause
choking and poisoning. Guns and pistols should be kept in safe places
such as lockers or gun safes. Most importantly, children should never
be allowed to play with firearms to prevent accidents.
Children require extra supervision in the home
because a delay of a few seconds can cause a serious mishap. It’s best
to take precautions and stay vigilant at all times than to suffer later.
