Celebrex Lawsuit and Side Effect Information
Despite numerous Celebrex lawsuits the drug remains a popular but closely watched treatment for arthritis pain. These suits identify several dangerous Celebrex side effects, some of which have proven fatal to users seeking relief from arthritis and other forms of pain.
Celebrex, manufactured by Pfizer, once made up a third of the three so-called "miracle drugs" intended to relieve arthritis and arthritis-related pain. Today, two of those drugs are off the market.
Celebrex Basics
The drug is commonly used to treat individuals suffering from pain caused by arthritis, as well as stiffness and inflammation also related to arthritis. The drug is extremely effective in its targeted treatment, as in most cases one dose is enough to provide relief for a period of 24 hours. Besides being used as a treatment for arthritis, Celebrex has also been prescribed as a treatment for general pain and inflammation, as well as menstrual cramps and colon polyps.
Celebrex is known as a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug, or an NSAID. In simple terms, Celebrex helps reduce the levels of hormones in the body that can cause inflammation and pain. Specifically, Celebrex is able to keep certain enzymes known as cox-2 enzymes from producing substances known as prostanoids. It's these prostanoids that are responsible for causing the body to become inflamed and feel pain.
Celebrex Side Effects
The most common Celebrex side effects include stomach pain, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and trouble sleeping. Less common and more dangerous Celebrex side effects include fainting, heart and kidney failure, deafness, stomach and intestinal ulcers, bleeding, weight gain, and weakness. The focus of most of the existing Celebrex lawsuits has been on some of these more dangerous side effects.
Current Status of Celebrex Lawsuits
Several Celebrex lawsuits have been filed against the drug's manufacturer, despite the benefits Celebrex has shown in treating arthritis-related symptoms. The suits have called into question the safety of the drug, pointing out several large-scale studies which have found that some Celebrex users have a measurably increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
Despite these lawsuits, Pfizer has continued to market and promote the drug as an effective and safe treatment for arthritis pain.
In 2004, a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute announced that Celebrex had more than doubled the risk or stroke or heart attack in the individuals who had participated in the study. Even though several similar drugs were recalled as a result of similar studies and results, Celebrex remained on the market.
Today, most Celebrex lawsuits have been filed by individuals who've suffered heart attacks, strokes, or internal bleeding as a result of taking the drug. Lack of direct and significant evidence to indicate the role that Celebrex plays in causing these dangerous side effects has allowed the drug to remain on the market.
If you've experienced any of these negative side effects, consider contacting a Celebrex attorney to discuss the possibility of recovering for damages.
