Car Accident Questions Answered: What to Do After the Accident to Help
Your Claim...
After a collision, you're going to have some car accident questions.
You should be thinking about what happened, and taking
certain actions to protect yourself legally.
First and
foremost is your health. Once you've made sure you're
ok, concentrate on documenting everything and keeping all
your car accident info
organized.
As we’ve said before, and will say again, recording
information about the collision is very important.
As soon as
you can, make some
initial notes on the scene. Even a brief outline
of things you remember will help.
(An accident report
form will help you organize important car accident info.
Everybody should keep one of these forms in their car's
glovebox.)
Later, when your mind clears, fill in
the details. You'll probably be able to answer more car accident
questions as you read through your notes. Also get a copy of the accident police
report, it will be full of usefull information.
Contact your own insurance company as soon as
possible.
If you were hurt, think about your personal injury claim...
Who's
at fault?
Against whom
will you make your claim?
There may be several
potentially liable parties. You'll need to write a letter of
notification to each parties' insurance company.
This
notification letter will not lock you into making a specific
claim. It merely tells them an injury has happened and, at a later
time, you may make a settlement demand. You
don’t want them to be blindsided later.
This letter
shouldn't give any details. Of course the insurance
company will have car accident questions. For now just let them know
some general car accident info:
-who you are
-general
location of the collision
-that
you were injured
Be sure to request a return letter confirming
that your letter with the car accident info was received. Date
your notification letter and make copies for yourself.
If you didn't get the insurance company's contact information, send the
letter directly to the party(ies) involved in the collision. Ask them
to redirect your letter to their insurer. Also ask
them to send you the company's name and address.
After this, assuming you're going ahead with your personal injury
claim,
you'll begin collecting
evidence and building your case.
Once you have
all that information, you've determined fault and added up all your
damages,
you can go ahead and write your demand letters.
